Boating accidents

California’s Coastline Provides Recreational Paradise

Unfortunately, the great number of boats on the water results in more accidents. Boating accidents usually result because of careless operation of the equipment or inattention of the operator. Recent California statistics report that 5,000 boating accidents are reported annually with 500 serious injuries and 60 deaths.

While some boating accidents are minor, others result serious injury and drownings. Recovering from injuries sustained in a boating accident can be difficult. Concerns vary from case to case, but victims of boating accidents generally must deal with increasing medical bills, pain, and emotional distress.

In a typical year 75 percent of boating collision deaths are caused by drowning. The vast majority of the drowning victims (almost 90 percent) are not wearing life jackets when the accident occurred. Smaller vessels (including jet skis) account for most of the drownings. Historically, 80 percent of drownings occur in vessels less than 21 feet long.

The U.S. Coast Guard identifies the five leading causes of boating accidents as:

  • alcohol use
  • excessive speed
  • failure to maintain a proper lookout
  • operator distraction/inattention
  • operator inexperience

Alcohol is generally the leading cause of accidents. Collisions between two boats are normally the leading cause of injuries; about a third of these accidents historically result in the death of one or more occupants.

Collisions between two boats were the leading cause of injuries in 2010, and were the third leading cause of deaths, after boats capsizing, flooding, or swamping. Collisions between boats and fixed objects like docks also caused a substantial number of deaths and injuries in 2010.
